What you need to know about the minimum wage in 2025

At JoeToe, we believe it is important that you know exactly what you are entitled to. The minimum wage forms the basis of fair work and financial security in the Netherlands. It determines the minimum amount you must receive per hour or month, regardless of your position or sector. The minimum wage in 2025 has been adjusted again, and the rules vary depending on age and working week. We explain clearly how it works: from the current amounts to the reasons behind the increases and what does and does not count. This allows you to check your payslip with confidence.

What exactly is the statutory minimum wage?

We often notice that there is confusion about what exactly the statutory minimum wage is. Simply put, it is a safety net that ensures employers do not pay too little. Everyone aged 21 and over is entitled to this, regardless of the sector. If you are younger, the minimum youth wage applies. This increases step by step until you reach the age of 21. It may seem unfair, but this is because young people often have lower fixed costs. Nevertheless, we see that this wage plays a crucial role in saving, becoming independent, or simply covering your first expenses.

Current minimum wage amounts in 2025 as of January 1 and July 1

If you work, you naturally want to know what you can expect. That is why we have listed the amounts for 2025 for you. As of January 1, the hourly wage for those aged 21 and older will be €14.06, which amounts to over €2,191 per month for a 36-hour working week. From July 1, this will increase to €14.40 per hour and €2,246 per month. If you are younger than 21, lower amounts apply, but you will also see increases here. Our tip: always check your contract carefully to see how many hours your official working week is, as this determines your monthly salary.

Reasons behind the semi-annual wage adjustments

You may be wondering why the minimum wage changes twice a year. There is a reason for this. The government links the minimum wage to the average collective labor agreement wages. If these increase, the minimum wage increases accordingly. On top of this is the impact of inflation, which makes everything more expensive. Right now, we are seeing that young people and those starting out in their careers are feeling the pinch in their wallets. The biannual increases help to limit the loss of purchasing power. So it is not a random decision, but a protective mechanism that automatically benefits you, without you having to do anything yourself.

What counts and what doesn’t count towards your minimum wage

Many people think that only their basic salary counts, but that is not entirely true. Allowances for evening or weekend shifts, shift work, or tips can be included in your minimum wage, provided this has been agreed upon. Things that are not included are holiday pay, pension contributions, or a year-end bonus. These are paid on top of your wage. At JoeToe, we often see young people misjudging their pay slips because of this. That’s why it’s smart to check exactly what your employer includes and whether you’re actually getting what you’re entitled to.

Why this is important to you

The minimum wage in 2025 is more than just a bare rule in the law. It is your guarantee of a fair salary. By knowing what amounts apply, why the adjustments are made, and what is and is not included, you will be in a stronger position in discussions with your employer or when applying for a job. At JoeToe, we believe it is important that you not only work, but also understand what is happening on your pay slip. So stay sharp and keep up to date with the minimum wage in 2025, so that you can keep control of your money and have a firm grip on your financial future.
